Sold at Auction (Donation)!!

Full disclosure: I did not take this photograph! But my friend Adam McKeague did give me permission to paint this painting using this photo as an inspiration; I was present when the photo of downtown Les Cayes was taken, for the record. Adam has let me tag him in reference to this painting on Facebook, so hopefully he won't mind me posting his photo on my blog...

I had been sitting on this painting for about a year and a half with no bites, so I donated it to a local fundraiser for the husband of a colleague who has stage 3 colon cancer. The painting did sell, and I secretly wish I knew for how much!

Inspiration

Fixed It...

I have to confess... I screwed up the first iteration of this painting so badly that I had to destroy it. There truly was no fixing it.

But I like how this has turned out. I do think the background is a tad too dark, but the use of the c.p. cadmium has helped. I'll detail the colors a little later, but let's just say I avoided the naples yellow hue this time around...

I'll have it framed on Monday!

Huzzah

I may need to extend some lines and I'm toying with the idea of throwing in some accent colors, but overall I'm pretty pleased with how this came out. 16 x 20 inches on panel board.

Same Painting, More Progress!

Layering, continued: quinacrindone violet mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with a 16 flat brush. Painting colors: background is prussian blue and titanium white brushed on with a 16 small brush; the buildings are painting on with quinacridone violet, phthalo blue, titanium white, paynes gray, naples yellow hue, and prussian blue. I'm thinking about accent colors now...

Another Haiti Painting, In Progress

A street in Les Cayes, Haiti. Layers are: one layer of gesso on pre-primed board, prussian blue (a liquitex color!) mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with a 16 flat brush, titanium white mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with a 16 flat brush, naples yellow mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with a 16 flat brush. Sketch of buildings done in paynes gray.

Description of process, continued: terre verte hue (no media) brushed on to top half of canvas with a size 16 Utrecht mixed synthetic brush (it's a lot smaller than the other size 16 brush I'm using, so I'm confused as to the actual size...); burnt umber (no media) brushed on to bottom half of canvas with a size 16 Utrecht mixed synthetic brush; pants painted with a mix of paynes gray and quinacridone crimson; Julianne's shirt is light magenta and primary magenta painted over with a light layer of quinacridone crimson; the older man's shirt is primary magenta mixed with quinacridone crimson; Israelson's shirt is n6 neutral gray mixed with a little bit of dioxazine purple.

Photographic Inspiration

I wasn't in Haiti for this moment and I have never met Julianne (but I do know Israelson). I saw this on Facebook and had to paint it.

I wish I would have captured more of the pre-work, but I got carried away and forgot to grab the camera, so here's the first picture.

The layers are: gesso on pre-primed canvas; burnt umber mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with 16 flat brush painted over the entire canvas; quinacridone crimson mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with 16 flat brush painted over the lower half of the canvas; quinacridone red with no media painted over the lower half of the canvas; paynes gray mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with 16 flat brush painted over the entire canvas; outline of figures in paynes gray (no media) applied with small brush; naples yellow hue mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with 16 flat brush painted over the entire canvas; terre verte hue mixed with soft gel (semi-gloss) applied with 16 flat brush painted over most of the canvas (excepting the very bottom, I think...); and outline of figures in burnt umber (no media) applied with small brush. Then I stopped and took this photo.

I think I'm going to change the name of this from "Lady in Waiting" to "Haitian Medical Clinic" or something. Hmm.

I'll frame her once the paint dries a little...
